Massage therapy offers
several wellness benefits.
As with chiropractic care, the benefits of massage therapy are not only physical, but mental and spiritual as well. Some of the benefits of massage therapy include:
-
Boost the immune system
-
Relaxes the muscles
-
Reduces stress and anxiety
-
Alleviates pain
-
Reduces blood pressure and heart rate
-
Increases circulation
-
Increases range of motion
Every massage therapy technique has a different level of intensity depending upon the depth of tissue that is being manipulated. Not everyone likes the same intensity and therefore different types of massages will be necessary for different patients.
Swedish massage
When most people think of massage they are thinking about Swedish massage. It is the most common type of massage therapy and includes the basic strokes required for all massage. Most Swedish massages start with superficial strokes in the direction of the blood circulation to warm up the muscles, then move to deeper tissues. The overall goals of Swedish massage include relaxation, muscle health and the removal of toxins from the body through circulation.
Deep tissue massage
Deep tissue massage therapy is targeted toward the deeper muscles and connective tissues to break up adhesions and decrease pain from injury, repetitive strain and postural problems. Deep tissue massage usually includes slow strokes and friction as well as techniques such as trigger point, neuromuscular and myofascial release. Deep tissue massage features a deeper intensity than normal massage and it can leave the patient sore for a couple of days. This is normal to remove toxins, increase range of motion and eliminate muscle tightness.
Therapeutic massage
Therapeutic massage therapy is typically used for people with chronic pain. The massage therapist focuses on correcting a problem that is causing the patient pain. Therapeutic massage can be used to treat various types of musculoskeletal disorders and conditions. Several different types of techniques can be used to accomplish this task.
Sports massage
Sports massage therapy focuses on muscles relevant to the event. For athletes who train continuously, the goal is to enhance endurance, lessen the chance of injury and shorten the time needed to recover from an event. Sports massage may utilize a variety of techniques such as classical Swedish massage or trigger point therapy. Prior to an athletic event, sports massage may be used with stretching in order to help athletes loosen, warm and prepare their muscles so that their performance and endurance might be enhanced. Following an athletic event, sports massage may be used to relieve pain, prevent stiffness and return the muscles back to their normal state. Sports massage may also be used for injury rehabilitation.
Prenatal massage
Prenatal massage therapy focuses on the mother-to-be as she goes through the changes due to pregnancy. Our certified therapists will focus prenatal massage treatment on the concerns of each trimester. We have a specialty table that allows women late in their pregnancy to lay face down without any pressure put on the abdominal area. After the mother has given birth, treatment will assist in restoring the body back to its normal condition. Prenatal massage may also help reduce and/or eliminate excess water retention. Massage therapy enhances the function of muscles and joints, improves circulation and general body tone, and relieves mental and physical fatigue.
